I have always loved fabric. My mother used to make beautiful dresses for me (and her) and I would collect the scraps to make clothes for my dolls! Some of those scraps ended up in a classic hexie quilt (pictured) that I started making in 1976 and finally "finished" a few years ago. As a newly wed homeowner,I made all the soft furnishings for my new home and didn't really sew for" fun " until I visited a vintage fair about 10 years ago. When I walked into the hall and saw stands groaning with vintage fabrics,I was hooked again. And so Quilterdown was born - the first quilt was for my god-daughter and I carried on from there.
In January 2021 I moved back to Somerset, just a few miles from where I was born and brought up. I now have a smaller studio but live in splendid rural isolation, surrounded by farmland.
I have many wonderful,returning customers who trust me to make them heirloom quilts,tablecloths and cushions (as well as unusual requests,such as party bags for a hen party). I also "rescue" vintage quilt tops,repair them and turn them into the quilts they were meant to be - keeping alive someone else's work and honouring their lives and inspiration.
I keep a notebook with me constantly to record ideas and anything can inspire me - floor tiles in a church,a picture in a magazine, a conversation. Often,a piece of fabric itself will "talk" to me!!!
