On the edge of the peak district is a small terraced house where, in the back bedroom, you will find me tearing up newspaper and smearing it in home-cooked paste, all in the name of papier mâché. Garden birds, beloved pets, strutting roosters, even a bride and groom have all been wrought from newspapers and magazines. The completed piece will usually evoke a Proustian memory of what I was listening to at the time it was made - I'm particularly partial to David Sedaris or anything written by John Finnemore. Not the Archers though. Please don't make me listen to the Archers. I've become a connoisseur of the properties of different magazine pages. The more expensive glossy ones have some good photos to select colours from but the expensive paper makes them more resistant to the glue. Of course, I had to use a bridal magazine for my happy couple. What else? Incidentally, did you know the traditional gift for a first anniversary is paper? Just saying...
