The Accidental Potter

The first time I touched clay, it was a peaceful and comforting experience. There is nothing more grounding than working by hand with raw materials and watching as it slowly transforms into a piece of work. This started by accident. I attended a wheel throwing workshop and instantly connected with working in this format. I went on to take further classes, and discovered Raku and the technique of hand building, which immediately resonated with me.

As someone who has ADHD, it’s incredibly difficult to be still, and I feel the need to constantly be doing something with my hands. Sculpting a piece of clay by hand helps give me that creative and physical release, and I found that hours would fly by as I slowly and intensely focused on the shape and texture of a piece.

I hand build all my pieces, and this usually takes several days. Each piece is lovingly hand crafted with painstaking attention to detail.
Every piece is a totally unique one-off, and never repeated.

In terms of my figurative art works, I wanted to make something that hopefully collectors can connect to visually. Mental illness has been a significant part of my life. Both as a sufferer and supporter. It feels important to me to use a way to express something I feel strongly about through art. This has been a form of art therapy for me, and hopefully for a buyer who can relate. Or anyone who just feels these pieces are interesting.

A recent comment on one of my sculptures was:

“I can relate to this, I feel like if you looked inside my brain that’s exactly what’s inside”
