About Abbie Gaiger

Abbie Gaiger

Hello! I'm Abbie and I design and make bold fashion jewellery based on geometry, symmetry and patterns found within mathematics.

I am a jewellery designer and maker, currently based in Birmingham but originally from Hampshire. I graduated in 2016 with a BA (Hons) in Jewellery Design & Related Products from Birmingham School of Jewellery, with my graduate collection being awarded runner-up of the RBSA Gallery Prize for Innovation & Creativity. My work has been exhibited in the UK, Germany and the USA, and I now continue to be based at the School of Jewellery as an Artist in Residence, where I continue to develop my practice.

Geometry, symmetry, bold lines and sharp forms are all central to my work and design philosophy. During my degree, I drew inspiration from the striking repetitive nature of succulent plants and the contrasting architectural structures of the terrariums and glasshouses that often house them, and I abstracted these forms and lines into wearable statement fashion and jewellery pieces. More recently, I have returned to the concepts of kaleidoscopic imagery, optical illusions and patterns found within mathematics, while still applying the same methodical design processes of repetition and abstraction.

Combining unconventional new materials and processes, traditional metal skills, and a pop of bright colour, my pieces are striking and graphic while maintaining an element of delicacy and lightness. Hand pierced metal shapes are scored and folded into symmetrical forms, which form a base for layers of laser-cut acetate. Powder coating and manipulated photographic prints add the all-important element of colour, giving the pieces a playful and fashion-forward edge. The juxtaposition of combining traditional hand metal skills such as piercing and scoring with innovative digital techniques such as laser cutting and digital print is central to my practice, as is the unexpectedness of unusual materials used alongside metal.

Ultimately, my work strives to be statement-making, innovative and unconventional, while remaining wearable, playful and colourful.
