Description

These four origami boxes are just 5 x 5 x 5 cm big (or a few mm larger with the lids on). They are made from patterned paper and have plain, richly coloured tops - one each of red, blue, green and purple. The design is a variation on the traditional 'masu' box, introduced by Tomoko Fuse. Their cubic shape gives them a playful, characterful feel. What makes these boxes unusual is that each one is lined with gold paper. This means that when you stand each box in its lid and pop a battery-operated tealight inside, the gold reflects the light and makes each box glow like a very tiny, cosy and inviting campfire. This works particularly well if you use the kind of battery tealights that flicker, as a real candle does. The boxes have one more secret. Once the flameless tealight is in, you can, if you wish, replace the lid - and the box transforms into a lantern! I have adapted the design of the lid so that it has a central square which allows the light to escape from within, creating a soft, magical glow. This is achieved with the use of Japanese kami paper, which is thin and crisp and a little translucent when held against the light. The set of four boxes is shipped within 3 days of ordering, and sent by Royal Mail Tracked 48 in a strong box. Biobased film is used to protect them while in transit, but it is best if the package is not left on a doorstep in the rain for too long, so if you're not going to be in, try and arrange for them to be left somewhere dry. The battery operated tealights shown in some of the images are not included with the purchase (nor, sadly, are the juggling balls). Being paper, these little boxes of light are delicate. However, handled with care, they will bring joy for many years to come.

When I first started studying origami, I was fascinated by boxes, and inspired by the designs of Tomoko Fuse. However, I also like my origami to be useful, so that's why I came up with the flameless tealight holder idea. Playing around with different materials made me realise the effects on the light of using metallic or thin ('onion skin') papers. I also tried white mulberry paper, which gives a beautiful glow but is too soft to make durable boxes! The symbolism in the origami patterns, many of which come from kimono fabrics, also interests me. For example, the box with the blue top has a bright geometric pattern representing hemp leaves, which symbolise growth, resilience and prosperity. The red-lidded box has chrysanthemums, a royal flower which depicts longevity and rejuvenation. The box with the purple top has wavy lines to show steam rising to the sky, overcoming obstacles. Finally, the green-lidded box has patterns reminiscent of swirling water, which represents life in all its movement, and tiny plum flowers, resilient because they flower in snow. I hope that these little boxes of light give as much pleasure as I have in making them, and that they hold meaning and joy for those that use them.

Being made of paper, the boxes are fragile. They need to be handled carefully and kept away from liquid, humid environments and naked flames (such as real candles or tealights!). Even when used with flameless candles (battery-operated tealights), I would advise that they are not left unattended.
