Each earring features an 18x12mm oval light grey-green Agate hand etched with Dzistyle markings, and set between Haematite discs. The beads are threaded onto copper wire and hung from copper ear-hooks. These Dzi-style (pronounce Ji, meaning brightness) beads are based on ancient Tibetan beads, made of Agate that has been etched with symbols. The oldest of these beads are in the 1 - 2,000 year old range. It is probable that the original beads were hand-painted with natural chemicals from plants, then baked causing a permanent imprint into the Agate, and they are valued in the £1000's per bead. Modern beads such as the one's I am using are still hand-etched onto Agate, but use modern etching techniques, and are much more affordable! The symbol on these beads is known as the 'great personage' or 'big man' - a stylised stick figure who represents both 'protector and guardian' and 'mentor and spiritual guide'.
