Ceramic Shard Discovered Thorsgill Beck Barnard Castle Co Durham September 2024 Handcrafted Pendant October 2025 In September 2024 I came across a piece of ceramic in Thorsgill Beck which runs into the River Tees, Barnard Castle. After a thorough clean I could see green flowers pattern discoloured from previous life, and journey in the beck. Although worn and crackled, the front glaze was slightly visible. I gently sanded the piece to create a chunky pendant. However, the condition of the ceramic caused it to crumble in places. Thankfully I managed to gently sand the piece until it fitted into a small pendant tray which contains and protects the ceramic, making it stable. The idea is to create something new from old and use recycled materials to produce individual, distinctive, unique gifts. The finished piece isn't meant to be perfect but instead retain part of the original character, including marks and scratches, all part of the history of the materials used. Sterling Silver is either recycled or repurposed and might show tiny marks left by the process of creation. Hanging on 18 inch recycled Sterling Silver chain. Set in 13 mm recycled Sterling Silver bezel tray. Both polished and hallmarked 925. Delivered in gift box made from FSC®-certified cardboard and water-based glue. Presented on Jewellery box insert made from tall oil, a by-product of paper production. Complete with short bio and FSC®-certified gift bag.

All materials personally collected from river banks, charity shops, recycle centres, beaches, wherever dropped, dumped or donated ceramics are found, cleaned and shaped into new stories. Each item comes with a short bio of where the ceramic came from, date found and re-created. Some shards collected are used as found, others are cut randomly which shape the final work. Every piece is individual, nothing replicated, however, due to repetitive patterns in ceramics there will be some similarity but only through the ceramic material not in the final piece.

I love collecting ceramic discarded, lost, forgotten, damaged or just not wanted any more. Favourite places are rivers and beaches, but also find great things at recycling centres and charity shops. I’m lucky to live near the River Tees, Co Durham and often walk the banks picking up broken glass, pottery anything that can be cleaned and re-worked and crafted into something new. Bits and bobs found by chance waiting to find new homes.
