I remember an old saying from when my mum tucked me into bed as a child. Not sure if it was supposed to be comforting, especially the 'don't let the bedbugs bite' part, and I always used to wonder about the 'sleep tight'. On a recent visit to Shibden Hall, home of Ann Lister (Gentleman Jack from TV), we saw the explanation on an information sheet. Apparently in the past, people used to tie rope around the mattress of their beds to keep them secure, hence the saying.
I just thought the sardines looked like they were enjoying a comfy lie-in bed.
