'Reeds' woodcut print
Green reeds are reflected in water in this delicate hand burnished woodcut print on fine Japanese Tosa Shi paper. Rather than being passed through a press, the tranquil image has been printed by careful hand burnishing from the back of the paper with a bamboo baren. The process was repeated with two plates, one for each shade of green. This is labour intensive but allows the printmaker to vary the pressure and so achieve stronger and softer effects where wanted. It also means that each print made is unique and yours might vary slightly from the one shown here.
Tosa Shi paper has two different sides. For this print the slightly rougher and more absorbent surface was used to achieve a soft and subtly textured image.
The title and artist's signature are written in pencil under the image.
The copyright watermark is of course not on the actual print.
