About The Art Machine

The Art Machine

Upcycling lost and forgotten treasures into something new and beautiful..

I have always crafted and have been selling my work for over 40 years.

I started out making soft toys and jewellery when I was a teenager, moving into hand painting on tee shirts, cotton, silk and satins, which I used to sell at craft fairs and wholesale to a few independent shops.

My mom was a very skilled tailoress, making handmade suits and specialising in invisible weaving - (mending holes in suits that had been damaged) - so I suppose it was inevitable I would sew...although I hated sewing when I was young!

Being surrounded by fabric, I have always loved the feel, smell and touch, but wanted to explore other things...

I always had a passion for stained glass, but after a rather nasty accident with a bread knife when I was 12, my parents decided I was too accident prone and there would be fingers all over the place, so I really wasn't encouraged in this area!

I trained in floristry and had a couple of florist shops, which I loved, but still always wanted to work with glass....finally I had the opportunity, and ultimately ended up teaching it at Adult Education classes - I also managed to keep all my fingers on the ends of my hands!

Though it broke my heart, I had to give this up due to breast cancer, as cancer drugs and a compromised immunity means I am now at risk of infections which can turn really serious - so messing with dirty lead and glass cuts are really not recommended!!!

So I am back full circle and sewing again.

My journey has been varied and difficult at times, but has always been full of colour, form, and above all, beauty.

I moved to Dorset around 25 years ago, and am constantly inspired by the timeless quality of the countryside, seaside and natural beauty, coupled with the incredible history of the area, both geological and social.

We can still create that charm and idyllic country feel, to give a sense of peace and tranquillity, and this is what I hope to create with my Sew Sustainable Range.

I take hand embroidered antique and vintage fabrics, that have been stitched with love and care and turn them into items that we use more of today, for example, Tea Cosies, Aga Pads, Cosmetic bags and Purses, Padded Hangers, Lavender bags and Shoe Refreshers and Keepsake Hearts. Each piece is unique and designed to be as eco friendly as possible and last for many years to come.
