Textural and sculptural hand-built ceramics

Hi I'm Sara. I work from my home studio in a Nottinghamshire village.I am hugely inspired by natural phenomena and the quest to describe life as we know it has always been at the core of my practice since my beginnings in Fine Art. I discovered ceramics through teaching and fell in love with its tactile qualities immediately. After Uni I focussed on working as an artist making performance and live art conceptual art. However this wasn't earning me any money so I turned to teaching which became a real vocation. After having my own babies I really felt the need and desire to be creative again. Dabbling with all sorts of stuff lead me to ceramics as a focus for my business.

I absolutely love being at the beach by the sea. I just feel more alive there. Influences from the creatures, colours and textures to using driftwood that I have collected flow directly into my pieces. I don't work to specific designs. I like to keep an edge of spontaneity to what I do therefore each piece I make is totally unique and intentionally not repeated exactly. I like to explore the beauty of imperfections, so rough edges and cracks creep in sometimes.

When I'm not making ceramics I take great pleasure in eating! So I do like to cook and bake from time to time and am very partial to an Indian take-away or restaurant, being vegetarian - it's my favourite food! I practice Tae Kwon Do to keep me active. I try to be healthy but do love chocolate and coffee! And I do have a cat - a pretty old one called Rocky, he's a Cornish-Rex and a beautiful grey colour. We also have two skinny-pig girls, if you haven't seen one look them up (mini hippos) - long story (allergic to most fury things)!
