Patchwork pet portraits by Jobo

What does a patchwork pet portrait look like? Well they're quirky, bespoke, custom made with a lot of love and take a good deal of planning and many hours of work. They make my customers smile, do they make you smile too?

Hi! I'm Jobo and I create Patchwork Pet portraits for animal lovers and other whimsies and quirky handmade items. I guess you could call me a Mixed Media artist primarily working in Textiles and Illustration, but I also create Lino prints, Ceramic pieces and occasional Stained-Glass panels. My work is quirky, colourful and unique.

As a teenager I grew up on a small holding in Norfolk and spent my days with a selection of wonderful animals- pigs, goats, geese, ducks, chickens, rabbits, dogs, and even a pony. Since then I have given homes to many needy souls-cats, guinea pigs, cockatiels, budgies, dogs, chickens, rats and fish. Animals bring so much happiness to my life and it was important that my boys grew up alongside animals too. Kindness is hugely important to me and rescuing animals and providing them with the home they deserve requires kindness. Thinking about others, sensitivity, selflessness are all amazing skills for my boys to learn. Animals teach us so much, they can increase and motivate our fitness, manage our stress levels, provide companionship and manage loneliness and depression. They teach us responsibility and ultimately how to be kind; they are very funny and basically a great addition to our family. Currently we live with three rescue cats who have inspired my recent collection of work that you will find in my shop.

Art has been a part of me for as long as I can remember, receiving coloured pencils from mum at Christmas and watching her sketch dogs in the park. Mum also loved to sew and knit, and I remember watching her for hours. In my last year at High School I decided that Art was the path I would choose, so went off to study a broad range of Art and Design techniques which culminated in a Ceramics and Glass Degree. My love of Textiles came much later, when I discovered the joys of free motion sewing on an old sewing machine that my Nan had left me. Drawing with thread felt amazing and was a real eye opener! Learning how to applique fabric so I could combine patterns, colours, textures and tones to create a piece of textile artwork was fantastic! And perhaps my newfound interest was in fact linked to growing up watching mum sew all those years ago!?

Creating Art really keeps me in a positive place, I am focused and, in the moment, especially whilst using a sewing machine at speed! I love to bring an idea out of my head and through my fingers, I think there’s something magical about that. It gives me great pleasure to see people smile when they receive my work and hear their reactions. I guess I am offering a service to provide joy, and happiness and if I can do this through my artwork then that makes me happy too.

I enjoy upcycling unwanted materials to create something new and loved, I like to work with fabric scraps, unwanted books and used paper, i suppose this is similar to my love of providing a rescue animal a home! All my pieces are created by hand, so no two items are identical, even on a repeated item, when you buy from me you are purchasing a bespoke and individual piece of artwork and a real statement piece of artisan craft.

Please contact me for further information regarding custom orders and don't forget to come and find me on Instagram and Facebook.

Warmest wishes Jobo.
