About Nuska Designs

Nuska Designs

I make beautiful, unique jewellery using metal clays and sea glass.

In 2022 I read a reference to silver clay and, having previously produced raku ceramics, thought "what on earth is that? A year later after a few training courses and much reading I started making earrings and pendants in copper and bronze clays.

Making jewellery also allowed me to indulge my obsession with collecting sea-glass and speculating about the stories that glass could tell. I collect much of the glass in Portishead just around the corner from Pill in Somerset where my ancestors were channel pilots. I wonder, do those shards of dark pirate glass littering the beach belong to bottles that they drank from?

The illustration shows my working space in a corner of my flat. I love the fact that much of the equipment is everyday and low-tech and that the metal to make the clays comes from recycling electrical items. The process of turning that lump of clay into solid metal feels like alchemy and very much like the reveal when you unearth your ceramic piece in the raku process.
