About Long Strands

Long Strands

Handpainted and drumcarded batts to spin or felt or just to squeeze and stroke in my colours or custom order the colours you want!

For years I wondered if I could sell my crocheted items. I found between my slow crocheting and my health it just wasn't happening. After a hip replacement my health took an upswing and I ended up in Yorkshire for a week, taking a two day spinning course. It was a dream come true! I had always wanted to make my own yarn and now I could! I reasoned that if I could spin, I could surely dye! My first attempt was Kool-Aid dyeing and I loved it! So I jumped to acid dyes. By now, the house was disappearing under the mounds of fibre! For Christmas (2015) my wonderful husband gave me a shed. He has turned it into a wonderful studio for me and we have our house back and I have the space to play with my dyes and fibre and dream about selling enough to pay to do more. I love the process of picking the colours and painting it on, then at the end of the process, picking two and drumcarding them together to see what you end up with. To pull the batt off the drumcarder and see what I have created is the part I love the best. Sometimes the colours take my breath away. They are so beautiful. I love every day and it is by far the best pain management I have found to deal with the chronic pain I live with. It used to be a chore getting up every day and finding things to distract me from the pain and just getting through the day. Now I can't wait to get up every morning and get started. I am the luckiest woman alive! I have a wonderful husband and I have found something I can do that I love ( and will hopefully make enough to cover my costs). Here is the bonus. Not only has it increased my "quality of life", but also distracts me from the pain I put up with every day and "It's a Wonderful Life!!" (Finally!)
