My name is Melanie Ann Green and I am a needle felter and print maker based in Scarborough on the beautiful North Yorkshire Coast. My birds are made from the comfort of my sofa in Felt Gardens (Where the biscuit tin lives) and at my studio on Hanover Road which I share with 2 other artists.
I have been making needle felted creations for 10 years and have made thousands of little birds in this time. Needle felting is a magical process which involves sculpting raw, fluffy wool in to solid shapes using only fine barbed needles and a lot of patience. I started making birds when I was living in a damp, cold basement flat and the lady who lived above me fed the birds and the seed pattered down on my porch so I made her a little white dove as a gift and haven't stopped making birds since.
When I'm not running my shop I like to do Kickstarter campaigns to crowd fund crazy projects, I recently completed a project to make 100 Needle Felted Dodos which I exhibited at Coastival 2019. I've also used Kickstarter to launch a range of pin badges and tea towels and mugs.
I spend a lot of time documenting the adventures of my penguins, they get into all kinds of scrapes!
