I was brought up on a farm in Yorkshire. I can clearly remember being fascinated by the fossils, pieces of broken pottery and clay pipes that were brought to the surface after my Dad had ploughed the fields. I would scour the fields for my treasures and then research historical facts related to my finds.
I have always loved the beach too and would return home with my pockets weighed down with shells, fossils and interesting pebbles. Once my Dad had to return to the beach when one of the shells still had its occupant inside, I returned it to the sea.
My passion for natural things led to me visiting Seaham Beach renowned for its abundance of opaque frosted sea glass, one visit and I was hooked. Nothing can beat the feeling of finding a beautiful piece of sea glass, glistening in the sunlight, picking it up and knowing that you are the first person to handle it after it was thrown into the sea, as waste, over a hundred years ago.
My first visit to Seaham was just after Covid Lockdowns and isolating. I craved the sandy beach, crashing waves and wide open spaces after lockdown and so began my journey into making unique and special gifts for my friends and family, using the treasures I find on Seaham Beach. A much loved hobby, which I have now developed into my own little business.
I use a variety of materials, sea glass, driftwood, pebbles and interesting stones, some with local folklore stories, that I use for my individual and one off pieces of art.
Sea glass to me is a metaphor for "Life" - symbolic of transformation and renewal, which is a perfect analogy for life after Covid restrictions.
I work as a Special Educational Needs Assistant/Mentor and live with my little black rescue cat Luna in County Durham.
