It's not just our products - it's a passion!

I decided to name the business after two very special dogs who are sadly no longer with us. Mutley was a flat coated retriever - he was black and shaggy and was often referred to as 'the bear', he liked to lurk under our tables at craft fairs and pop out when people least expected it, and Kachina was a sarloos wolfdog hence 'the wolf'. They were unique and very special souls and were the centre of our lives for far too short a time and are forever loved and missed.

Carl Larsson is the craftsman behind The Bear and The Wolf. He has a great love and passion for wood, and about wildlife. The range of animal, bird and insect products are the core of what he makes but the range of other items for the home is extensive.
In his own words “I was always messing about with wood from a young age and making things just came naturally. Working with wood has been something I have always done as a hobby, purely for my own enjoyment, and it never occurred to me I could sell my work. After being made redundant in 2009 my Wife encouraged me to make my hobby my business and I have now embraced it fully.”
From candle holders to picture frames, from mirrors to coat racks, from insect houses, to wine racks, from owl boxes to hedgehog houses - each item is carefully hand crafted and takes many hours of work but each piece is a genuine pleasure and privilege for him to make.
Carl will always work with nature, not against it, and often the form of the finished piece will flow from the original shape of the wood. His ideas come when actually handling the timber - sometimes the piece of wood will lend itself immediately to an idea, and sometimes the end product evolves from working on the piece and it defines its own result.
The Bear and The Wolf aims to bring out the character, warmth and individuality of wood - every piece made by Carl is totally unique. I hope you enjoy his art and that whatever you buy will make a stunning and beautiful statement in your home or garden.
