About Can't Buy Smiles!

Can't Buy Smiles!

I make cards and miniature porcelain ceramics to treasure, delight and amuse - you can't put a price on a smile!

Can't Buy Smiles! I usually have a smile on my face while I'm working on my cards and porcelain. Please come and look - you're very welcome to share my smiles with me!

Our home is on the beautiful Isle of Arran in Scotland. We've lived here for 15 years and wouldn't change it. I share my home with my husband, Keith, and our Labrador called Sam. Arran's such a beautiful and peaceful place to dream up ideas.

I've always loved painting and drawing. In December 2015 I was painting a mousey Christmas scene for my own amusement. A friend saw what I was doing. She loved it and said that it would make a great Christmas card. That became my very first card and and it's still one of my Christmas cards. You'll have to wait to see that one. I mostly work with watercolours because I can use both brilliant colours and great subtlety. It's great seeing ideas that have popped into my mind coming alive on paper. You'll see that many of my cards involve mice in one way or another. Mice can be hidden in all sorts of places, just waiting for you to find. With encouragement from friends, family and Arran people, the collection of cards is continuing to grow.

Working with clay became part of my life when I was 15 years old. One Saturday morning, when I was supposed to be painting, I found the ceramics department at our local art school. It was love at first sight. From that day I've always loved working with clay. I discovered porcelain around 30 years ago. It's been a continual voyage of discovery. Porcelain is a wonderful and entrancing clay to work with. But, it can be difficult, demanding and challenging. It's just perfect for the intricate detail that I so enjoy making. I really do make everything by hand - every mouse, flower, leaf and whisker is individually made. Flowers can take ten or more separate pieces of clay to make and there can be more than 100 flowers on one piece of work! When I'm working on larger, very intricate pieces I never, ever count. I just turn the radio on in my workshop and lose myself in my work. A temperature of 1253C turns what was originally soft malleable clay into a hard, durable finished product. Porcelain is deceptive, it is much stronger than it looks. Often I decorate with on-glaze enamel colours and lustres. Sometimes I leave it as pure white, bisque porcelain which works beautifully with transparency, light and shade. No two pieces will ever be the same - they are unique!
