About Alys Power Jewellery

Alys Power Jewellery

Imperfectly simple jewellery in wood, gemstones, enamel and precious metals.

I've been making jewellery since 2004 (that's frighteningly close to two decades). Jewellery making has been with me through university (twice), part time jobs, child rearing, house moves and more. It's my constant and my happy place. There aren't many activities that are more satisfying than hitting things with hammers and jewellery lets you make noise, mess and mistakes and end up with something beautiful at the end of it.

My style has evolved over that time and I'm really proud of what it has become - I aim to make wearable and contemporary jewellery to suit every woman. Simple and understated but also organic and imperfect - just like us all.

Jewellery is such an intimate and personal thing. To make a piece which someone chooses to wear everyday, which they use as an expression of who they are is an amazing thing and I am so privileged to be a part of that process. It really is the best job in the world.

I've spent 10 years studying design and craft and I'm delighted that's it now my full time job. Alongside making my own work I also teach jewellery and silver-smithing classes and run Nottingham Jewellery School, an independent school of jewellery making and metal smithing.

My jewellery is all made in my home workshop, a converted 1930's brick garage with long windows, a vaulted ceiling and views over the allotment garden and apple trees. If the weather is fine it gets the sun all day and I can hear the bids in the garden, when the weather blows a gale it's a warm and cosy refuge from the outside world.

I'm inspired by the domestic and suburban world around me - the world most of my customers live in too. I think that's where people find a connection with my work. It may not be very tangible at times but there is a instinctive comfort in the designs that comes from that recognition of a similar place. All my work begins with drawing and mark making - you can see it in the background of the jewellery photos. Drawing allows me to play and explore, to capture elements that interest me and to begin the design process. In these abstract pages I find the compositions, lines and forms that eventually become jewellery.

When I'm not making all I need to make me happy is warm feet, a good book and little peace and quiet.
