About Whitstable Tails

Whitstable Tails

Illustrative textile art born from folk tale narratives

"Has she nothing better to do?" has been asked regarding my creative output. Yes, I suppose I do have "better" things to do, but where is the joy in that?

From my attic studio I draw with pen, brush and needle to create fairytale creatures with opinions. Every mermaid has a tale, and she'll tell you about it at the drop of a hat. Especially the MernaPauses.

Each piece is sketched and then either stitched freehand on my trusty sewing machine, or embroidered by hand. Each one is hand painted and finished. Each one an individual. Often creating specifically to commission or exhibition brief, I also have to deal with the ideas that insist on being made - which often queue jump.

Much of the material is reused, recycled or out of the fabric bin - very little is wasted.

In addition to the textiles and art dolls, I offer a range of prints of some of my favourite pieces.

I live in a seaside town on the North Kent coast, a creative community that led to my co-founding the Profanity Embroidery Group, and much fun shenanigans. My husband is a watch maker and we have a shouty Cat that adopted us, who when we are both too focused on our particular work benches, reminds us that food is good.

You can follow my creative endeavours on instagram @whitstabletail and I have been trying to be more regular in my use of Substack.
