Original Artist Edition Prints of Trees & Colourful Wooden Letterpress Posters

I love printing with wood - both my core work that sees me printing trees to unlock the treasures within, and also latterly with antique wooden letterpress. In an increasingly complex digital world don't you just love the analogue pleasures of making things?

Trees can be so beautiful to look at; provide us with many fruits; form the basic building materials of our homes, furniture and even fuel. Combined with the fundamental fact that they release oxygen and allow us to exist, you’d think that they might be more celebrated in art?

In an era of increased and vital focus on climate change should we all not look inside and examine our environment and act on what we find? If trees are the lungs of the world, then recent events should highlight why lungs are especially precious.
What if we stopped and tried to look inside, taking a cross section across a trunk? What is revealed are many hidden secrets in the history of that tree- its age, evidence of stress and human intervention. In short, its very like a CT scan of a human torso giving us insight into what may be inside a trunk at that point, and the resulting images can be surprising – exposing the natural beauty within.

To create a detailed printed image involves several stages including seasoning for several months, sanding, charring, brushing, sealing and printing. It is such a joy to work by hand with wood, ink and paper – especially the ‘reveal’ when you first peel the paper back and see how it turned out.

Using a relief printing technique, every print is handmade and unique due to the variations in inking, print pressure and type of paper. The results may be considered a fingerprint or scan of the tree trunk at a particular point along the trunk including any effects of insects or man.

The wood I am using is from trees already felled, and in many cases are a gift from friends along with some associated backstory and provenance.

If you have a beloved tree that has fallen and wish to capture its beauty and majesty then talk to be about creating a bespoke print from a section of the trunk for you to keep as a memorial or celebration.

Aside from the more classic black ink prints I also love working with colour. Aside from the coloured images I offer for sale here, you can choose any colour for any of my wood blocks as well as choosing black or white frames or you can buy just the bare print, shipped in a protective postal tube.

The love of colour extends to my recent experiments with letterpress -thanks to alan Kitching for the inspiration to use an outdated format re-purposed in glorious colour to make a powerful statement or just to brighten up our lives.

Coming soon will be new tree prints of various sizes, greetings cards, bags and books - all with the focus on natural and sustainably created.
