About Tranquillity Mobiles

Tranquillity Mobiles

I make decorative mobiles to bring a feeling of peace to your home.

Welcome to Tranquillity Mobiles. I'm Julia and I create Tranquillity Mobiles. Thank you for visiting my shop.

Tranquillity Mobiles began when I made a mobile from some left over Christmas baubles A friend saw it and suggested I make some to sell. It was quite a while before I started trying the idea, first with more left over baubles, but then creatively with salt dough and icing cutters to create my Sunflower and Daisy mobile. It was a great encouragement when people liked them and wanted to buy them.

My ambition was to create mobiles as home decor, not just for children. Mobiles which hung in mid air, apparently unsuspended, and on which all the elements could move around independently. I needed thin wire and invisible thread to do that, and I learned that ebay was a good place to find what I needed at midnight! I had to learn computer skills as well as my craft skills. Many years later I'm still making mobiles and developing my product range.

I now use some blank wooden shapes bought from laser cutting specialists (I know my limitations!), EVA foam sheet, and salt dough, and anything else which inspires me. Following an enquiry as to whether I could make a stained glass mobile for a church foyer, which would have been dangerous, I discovered glass painting and now produce a range of items which look like stained glass but are made from acrylic sheet which is safe to hang.
My workshop is a table in my spare room where I now have a large cupboard full of boxes of materials and tools. I repurpose cat food boxes as storage. Covered with paper, or better still, sticky-backed plastic, they sit side by side with no wasted space. They are strong, easy to label, and look good as well as being very practical.

I share my home with my cat, Whisky. He likes to try to 'help' with the mobiles, and will often be found asleep on a box under the table or curled up on top of a bookcase.

Creating mobiles is relaxing, and so is sitting with a cup coffee and watching the finished product drifting around in mid air in a slow never-ending dance. Do buy one and see for yourself. Hang it in a corner of a room and see how it brings life and movement to the space, but be warned – you can waste a lot of time just watching it!
