About Tranquillity Mobiles

Tranquillity Mobiles

I make decorative mobiles to bring a feeling of peace to your home.

Hi! I'm Julia and I create Tranquillity Mobiles. Thank you for visiting my shop.

Tranquillity Mobiles began when I made a mobile from some left over Christmas baubles A friend saw it and suggested I make some to sell. To be honest, I didn't think anyone would really want to buy them, so did nothing about it.

Some years later I was inspired by some post Christmas sale decorations, and tried making a mobile. The bug really got to me then, and I started telling people what I was doing. To my surprise I sold some mobiles. Thus encouraged, I have been creating mobiles ever since!

I wanted my mobiles to weave around in the air, and hang apparently unsupported. I have experimented with a number of different materials for making them. I have had to learn about sources of supply, wire gauges, glass paint and other unexpected information, including how to buy on ebay! It has been a fascinating journey and the resulting mobiles hang and move exactly as I planned.

I have been asked on occasions if I could do something I had never tried before. Those commissions have been the inspiration for new products and new ways of doing things. I am always pleased to be asked to try something new - it might be the start of something really interesting, so do please ask if you would like something special.

My workshop is a table in my spare room. I have boxes, trays and shelves full of materials for making mobiles, packing them and posting them. Finished mobiles are hung in big plastic boxes, individually shrouded in large plastic bags. The inspiration for that came when I collected a jacket from the dry cleaners. I am still reusing the same 100 bags that I bought ten years ago. I have a precious set of jewellers tools for dealing with the wire work, and the bent nosed pliers are essential for tying knots in invisible thread. It was watching The Supervet on TV tying sutures that inspired me to look for bent nosed pliers - inspiration comes from some strange places!

Over the years I have learned a great deal. My mobiles are constantly developing and improving. I now have an Instagram page where I can display videos of the mobiles in action ( http://instagram.com/tranquillitymobiles ) so do please have a look at it.

I share my home with my cat, Whisky. He likes to try to 'help' with the mobiles, and will often be found asleep on a box under the table or curled up on a letter tray which is far too small for him!
