About SmallFlamePottery

SmallFlamePottery

I create beautiful pottery thrown from clay and fired in flames. I love making pots, I hope you will love to own them too!

I've been making pots off and on since the 1970s, learning from my dad Ron and brother Rick using a wheel and electric kiln that we made in the garage. Making things is in my blood and now part retired I've now satisfied my childhood dream and built and fired my own gas-fired kiln. My flame kiln produces a richer set of glaze effects than is possible in an electric kiln and reproduces effects in classic Japanese wood-fired stoneware pottery. The photo above shows the pots from the 2nd firing of my kiln.

My studio, "the pottery shed" is a small stone built building on a Cheshire canal towpath that apparently was used as a stable for towing horses. In there I have two wheels, including the original kick wheel that Ron made and on which I learnt to throw. I'm also a keen gardener and grow flowers and veg on my clay-rich garden soil.; here my two hobbies meet as I've made some quite decent Earthenware pots from the deeper clay subsoil, although its really best for flower pots.

We have a house full of pottery that I've made over the years, together with pieces my family have made or collected. In order to develop my pottery hobby I'm using Folksy so that others can own and utilise my work.
