"Life was fast. Always on, always connected and relentless. Finding balance between being busy and calm was tricky, and it had started to affect my mood. Staying happy was an uphill struggle.
Since the age of 5, I enjoyed sewing, learning many of my skills from my grandmother. Then in London as a twenty-something, sewing became my therapy. A moments solace away from hectic everyday life. Making slippers in bold and colourful fabrics instantly lifted my mood. But as I sewed, I realised that I was doing much more than making a slipper. I was making time for myself.
I focussed on keeping this balance between busy and calm, and slowly became more contented. Wearing what I made reminded me to have more down time, more silence and more calm. It gave me time to reflect and gain a bit of perspective!
Silent Soles is about more than just balance. My awareness increased of the fast, throw away culture, and the textile industry's impact on the environment. I wanted to create a product that not only promoted calm within the people who wore it, but also campaigned for an awareness of materials we use, particularly plastics and synthetics, and promote a happier culture that isn't focused on a 'fast fashion fix'.
