About My Friend Sandra's Sewing Emporium

My Friend Sandra's Sewing Emporium

Using my magpie collection of fabric and threads I design and make textile art for fun, use and decoration.

Hello. My name is Jan and I am lucky enough to live in the beautiful port of Brixham in Devon. As a local girl I have always loved the sea and am happiest sitting by it, swimming in it or kayaking on it. The sea inspires and calms me and has been the focus of many of my textile creations.

I started hand embroidery in my early twenties and loved it so much I went on to study City and Guilds Embroidery and Design at Exeter and an HNC in Stitched Textiles via Gloscat. Both courses introduced and expanded the alchemy that transforms a selection fabrics and threads into items of beauty. I can truly say that I have never looked at anything in the same way since. Any item, image, song, text or whatever can trigger hours of what ifs.

My work room is a place I love to be with far too many books, magazines, boxes of thread, buttons, beads, ribbons - yep you know the drill! Often I sit and rearrange things, knowing there are some things are far too precious to ever be used, but on other occasions I am a mad woman possessed to produce what is thundering around my head. This can be practical items such as bags and purses, wall art, books and scarves because I love them or a few more of the helpful elf family.

I love travelling with my husband and taking lots of pictures for reference but I am hoping to get better at sketching to be a proper artist! After a trip I am always pleased to come home and get back in the garden, both working in it and enjoying a glass of wine to celebrate my hard work. I enjoy life and I hope that shows in my work.
