I am a fused glass artist working mainly with specialist art glass which comes in thin sheets which can be cut and broken as required. This is complimented by other forms of the same glass – large and small grains, powdered glass and also inclusions such as wire and metals. These all combine to create elements to add interest and elevate designs.
My inspiration comes from shapes, colours and patterns found in the environment – natural forms in geology and the diversity of all living things, both on land and in water. Many of the works listed here are abstract impressions influenced directly from the landscape, our seas and oceans and the life found there. Elements of human interactions and the effect we have on the landscape can add a sense of connection and familiarity. My time is split between the Midlands and Cumbria which are quite different but each with a unique personality. The world is a treasure trove of inspiration and I use photography to record wherever I travel.
Glass designs have an almost painterly quality, hinting at illustration, the drawn line, stained glass and also mosaic as a means of bringing the design together by heating in a specialist kiln until all the elements have melted and fused into one piece. Forms are created by gently softening these pieces of fused glass designs over or into ceramic slumping moulds until the glass takes on the desired form. Textures come from natural found materials – leaves, bark, grasses, stones and twigs. Sometimes my designs incorporate these textures into the glass and this is done by firstly, taking impressions of the objects using soft clay. I then use the impressions as a basis for casting a plaster mould and then melting the glass over the texture mould until it picks up the textures. This creates patterns and changes in the thickness of the glass, adding an extra dimension, and the light plays around in these areas of thick and thin, saturated areas of colour and is reflected in different ways presenting flashes of brightness or a warm glow depending of the colours utilised.
Glass has many personalities and I find it interesting to test it and push it to behave as I want, or at least as far as it will allow. As a material, glass is extremely contradictory, it is a solid liquid, it can seem hard and sharp, soft and velvety, transparent and opaque.
All of my works listed here are made using Bullseye Art Glass and other compatible glass materials and utilising specialist electric glass fusing kilns in my dedicated glass art studio near Newark on Trent in Nottinghamshire.
