Bitten by the reclaimed wood bugs

A little bit about me......

Hi my name is Mark Smith and I design and make home decor from reclaimed wood and have done so for around the last 3 years. I am self taught and haven’t attended any courses or higher education in arts or crafts, but my love for wanting to create fantastic home decor comes from my love to do just that, and probably dates back to my school days enjoying woodwork (a very long time ago).

It wasn’t however till around 2015 that I decided to go ahead and take my love for designing home decor and start making items for my own family home. My wife said one day that we needed a coffee table for the living room, we looked at retail sites and couldn’t find what we really wanted....then it struck me, why not make one myself !

So thats what I did. I knew a work colleague who was rennovating a circa 1930’s care home and making it into her new family home and told me that she had wooden floorboards and much more that I could use for free.

After searching I managed to find some great floorboards and finally had the materials for our new table. After designing the look of the table I set to work, never having made any furniture or anything similar since my school days and 2 days later using what tools I had...hey presto our new coffee table was made and the bug had biten me.

I ended up making another coffee table (the one above) Which was eventually sold to a young couple in London for their apartment.

From then on I made furniture and wall art for our home and it was my wife again who said that I should start sellng my items, and here I am today where I now also design art on digital media and fuse this with hand painted reclaimed wood.

My inspirations are always using reclaimed wood as I just love the natural raw elements and character that they bring to any item. I love to take inspiration from Dutch Abstract Expressionist Willem de Kooning, who uses the technique known as pulling and scraping, who achieved this effect with a palette knife, and the German contemporary painter Gerhard Richter, who often used a squeegee.
