About Joanna Wakefield Jewellery

Joanna Wakefield Jewellery

Silver jewellery reflecting a love for textiles and haberdashery and a penchant for vintage and found objects.

I'm a jewellery designer maker working from my studio in York.

My original training culminated in a Degree in Design, specialising in Textiles, which was no surprise having grown up in a family environment of 3 generations of needlewomen! My degree took me into work as a Fair Trade designer, travelling extensively around the world developing traditional handicrafts with producer groups and their artisans. After more than 10 years I could no longer ignore my personal desire to extend and develop further creatively and so I retrained at York School of Jewellery as a designer jeweller.

A huge part of my jewellery designs are influenced by textiles and haberdashery, stemming from a fascination that grew from admiring my Grandma's talents and fond memories of sorting through her button stash.

You will find handmade silver cotton reels (hallmarked in such a way as to reflect the labelling found on vintage bobbins) and thimbles cast from vintage finds. Also silver buttons which have been worked in such a way as to reflect the appearence of a button and one-off pieces using interesting vintage and found buttons.

My haberdashery theme holds much nostalgia. Combining my family history and my education and expressing it through a different medium in silver has been both a natural progression and a delight to persue.

My jewellery also reflects a penchant for old and found objects and I love incorporating such finds into my jewellery where I can. From antique keys found at French brocantes to the use of old ceramic tap tops sourced at English carboots and antique fairs. You will also see this influence in my workshop surroundings, in my product photography, and my presentation and display!

Overall, my jewellery reflects my memories, my observations and my musings. Thereby allowing me to tell the story and the journey behind each range, which is really important to me.

My perfect studio day combines copious amounts of tea and my cat Earl Grey as company.

You can follow my story and find updates on my Facebook page with more daily progress and inspiration on my Instagram feed.

Please do get in touch if you have any queries or requests, I'd love to hear from you!
