One Man & His Shed...

My name is John and I am the proprietor of Into The Woods.

After finishing University, I made several poor life choices, suffered a huge lack of direction, and generally bounced from job to job, trying to find a purpose that offered a challenge, fulfilment and stability. Life's holy trinity!

While going through a bout of unemployment in 2011 it was suggested to me that working with wood may offer much needed creativity and direction.

I set about using my fathers tools and some pallet wood to start making some very primitive projects, with some very primitive skills.

My first niece was born in 2009, and as she grew from baby to toddler she began little obsessions with toy kitchens, dolls houses and more. I began to focus on children's furniture, believing there was a gap for good quality, handmade toys and furniture.

As the years have gone by, my skills are slowly growing. I've taught myself new techniques using YouTube. I've learnt how to design in 3D using "Google Sketch-Up'. I've accumulated a workshop full of machinery and tools. I've designed and built a small workshop from scratch. Created toy boxes, Christmas sleighs, toy kitchens, step stools, garden benches and more.

As with life, a lot of what I do has changed and developed from those earlier days as I've learned from my mistakes. I now focus purely on the beauty and uniqueness of the wood. Working primarily with oak, I offer personalisation, and am trying to create a cohesiveness and connection from piece to piece.

I'm still in my infancy and I'm always learning with every item I make. I plan to go back to college this year to study furniture design and creation, with the aim of developing my skills, and being able to transfer these skills to the things I offer. My aim is to be able to design and create quality bespoke fine furniture.

There's still a long, long, way to go. Making beautiful items can be incredibly time consuming and difficult. Turning it into a sustainable and rewarding business in a world of mass consumerism seems an impossibility. However seeing what I've achieved since 2011 makes this all seem a little more achievable.

I hope you will become part of that journey.
