Bristol-based disabled creator of all things lush, colourful, quirky and handmade

Hello! I’m Sharon, the disabled artist and maker behind Gert Lush Designs, creating all things lush from my home in Bristol.

I’ve had a love affair with sewing machines for as long as I can remember. I first learnt to sew on my great-granny’s beautiful manual Singer sewing machine and, although I’ve now upgraded to a rather more modern electric one, I still love the magic of turning a piece of fabric into something completely new.

Living with several chronic illnesses means I’m mainly housebound, so creating has become much more than just something I enjoy. It helps keep me sane, gives me a welcome distraction from my symptoms and, most importantly, gives me something colourful and happy to focus on.

And I really love colour! Bold prints, bright fabrics, rainbows and joyful colour combinations are very much my thing. I genuinely think the world needs more colour in it to make it a happier place to be, and I love the thought that something I’ve made might add a little burst of happiness to someone else’s day.

I’m happiest when I’m experimenting, so I’ve never managed to stick to just one type of making. Alongside my fabric creations, including handbags, zipper bags and reusable gift bags, I love doodling and painting, creating wirework jewellery and playing with fused glass.

I especially enjoy making things that are both lovely and useful. Whether it’s a colourful bag that makes everyday life a little brighter, a piece of artwork that makes you smile or a one-of-a-kind piece of jewellery, I want my creations to feel fun, individual and made with heart.

I also love hearing people’s ideas, so I’m always happy to consider custom requests and see whether we can turn the idea in your head into something wonderfully lush.
