I design and make my work on the sunny South Coast of England, and I have been working with glass for over 30 years! ( it doesn't seem that long) One of my greatest pleasures is choosing and arranging the beautiful colours and textures that glass has. It's calming and exciting at the same time. In recent times I have begun to add other materials into my pieces, like shells, stones and china, which give an extra dimension.
I like finding the essence of a place or an animal or bird and this can make my work look deceptively simple, in truth, many of my designs take years, and I won't sell something unless I feel that it's is absolutely right. Sometimes it's like I think in stained glass!
I always start with little sketches in pencil, or whatever is to hand, often working from life, to make sure that I capture the energy and the life in my subject.
I enlarge the drawings in photoshop, then print and trace them to form the cartoon that I will use as a template to cut the glass and assemble the piece. I will utilise any space I can, currently I work in my garage but at one time I managed to work in an old outside toilet! I am ably assisted by my cat Loki, who casts his critical eye from the door, and the house budgie, who is happy to observe my copper foiling from the top of my head.
