About Compass Rose Studio

Compass Rose Studio

Celtic knotwork reinvented, re imagined and restyled for the modern home.

When I did my degree many moons ago, my woven textile designs were inspired by Celtic knotwork I loved the intricacy and detail in the Lindisfarne Gospels and Book of Kells. The under and over patterns are very like the structure of woven fabric and the geometry appealed to the logical mathematical side of my brain.

I started Compass Rose Studio as a creative outlet after the mill I worked at closed and I made the difficult choice to draw a line under my 22 year career as a textile designer and move into a non design job.. I bought a lot of the fabric when I left the mill in 2011 and still have a small supply even now which I use in various products. Woven fabric is still my first love !

As my tweed "stash" depleted, I came across my old sketchbooks and rediscovered my love of Celtic knotwork. Inspired by this and a three month furlough in 2020 I began to work on some new design ideas which form the core of my Celtic Connections Collection.

The Compass Rose Studio itself was built in 2014 and has been a workplace, party venue, chill space and even a home cinema. With views across the Aberdeenshire countryside sitting in a beautiful garden, it is the perfect place to be creative.

And what studio wouldn't be complete without a cat and we have the lovely DAISY, a very charming but sometimes annoying addition to the workspace !

Across the garden pond sits Compass Rose Workshop home to my creative other half who dabbles in making wonderful pieces from reclaimed wood, when he's not working hard on making the garden even more fabulous.
