About Chrissie Freeth

Chrissie Freeth

Tapestry Artist

I weave large scale tapestries for exhibition on a traditional wooden loom using hand-dyed woollen weft and cotton warp. I am inspired by folk tales and medieval iconography and craftsmanship. My work explores the female experience and in particular those universal themes that connect us across cultures and centuries – exile, grief, fractured families, failed motherhood, rejection and survival, defiance, rebirth. I've travelled Europe studying medieval techniques as a WCMT Fellow, I exhibit here and abroad having recently been selected for ARTAPESTRY6, I am a trustee of the Heritage Crafts Association and an associate member of the APPG for Craft. I am one of a handful of tapestry weaver included in the Crafts Council's Directory.

These smaller pieces for sale here I think of as fragments to these larger pieces, a place where I can experiment and try things out. It takes months to make a tapestry, even these small pieces can take several days.

I am based in Yorkshire and although my workroom is not normally open to the public, if you would like to see a piece before purchase, you are welcome to arrange a visit.

You can find out more about me and my work, as well as exhibitions and events planned at my website https://chrissiefreeth.wixsite.com/weaver
