About Cyanotype
The cyanotype printing process was developed by the polymath Sir John Herschel in 1842, just three years after the discovery of photography. Cyanotype is a photographic process that is sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light, made up of the chemicals ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide. The chemical is mixed and paper stock is coated evenly and left to dry under a safe light. When dry, the coated paper appears a yellowish colour and is ready for printing. Through contact printing with a negative under UV light the chemicals fix the image
and when washed the print oxidises, transforming into a variety of beautiful blues.
The cyanotype was used widely as a commercial process in industry for creating schematic blueprint drawings that would be used by engineers, architects, designers and builders. At Blue Print Planet we mix the chemical solution ourselves using Herschel’s original formula. Each of our designs is digitally drawn using modern illustration techniques, making sure the motif and its delicate features come out well defined, while retaining their vintage feel. We use the highest quality paper stock that weighs 300gsm and is perfectly suited to the cyanotype process.
Working with a process that is over 170 years old, and with every cyanotype print being individually hand coated, printed and washed, each print made is completely unique. The brushstrokes, chemical speckles and small imperfections, that are often visible, add to the individuality of each print and form the character of the cyanotype process, which gives each piece an authentic handmade aesthetic.
