Handbuilt ceramics - both functional and decorative

Situated in Norfolk, Bird Box Pottery derives it's name from the tiny studio in which it operates and is home to me, Nikki Roberson.
I studied three dimensional design at Cardiff Institute of Higher Education, graduating in 1993, but didn’t return to working in ceramics until 2011 and at that point it was only a hobby. In 2017 I finally decided to give up my ‘office job’ to dedicate all my time to ceramics, focusing on hand built stoneware.
Every piece is slab built or coiled in a variety of stoneware clays and occasionally porcelain. The piece is finished by either carving into the surface to create a texture or by impressing a pattern with modelling tools. Finally, colour is added using glazes or coloured slips and stains.
My influences are varied and inspired by nature; landscapes I have seen on my travels and sometimes architectural structures.
I am continually exploring the endless possibilities of working with clay; using different clay bodies and seeing how this effects the form of the pot and the overall aesthetics of each piece.
My work can be functional or standalone sculptural pieces.
