This sculptural ceramic is from my Kindred Collection of abstract forms, and makes an unusual focal point in any room. Kindred pieces can also be used to contribute to contemplation during yoga and mindfulness meditation, their simple forms promoting a calming atmosphere for practice. I created the piece from black stoneware clay then added decorative panels and motifs in muted shades of cream, yellow, pastel green. After the first firing I brushed on a carefully positioned finishing touch of a couple of dots of glaze to add a highlight. There are different but related motifs back and front of the form with a band of grey wrapping around from front to back to connect the two facets. Though of course which you choose as front, and which as back is entirely up to you! Each piece in the Kindred Collection is different because each is entirely handmade and has a personality of its own – I don’t use moulds or transfers. The form has a grainy matt finish of the natural unglazed clay after firing. 17 cm high.

The Kindred Collection is the result of many absorbing hours examining ancient Minoan and Cycladic votive objects in museums of Crete and Rhodes. The decorative motifs and patterns reflect my interest in textile design from the early 20th century. The combination of ancient and more recent inspiration is, I hope, an interesting fusion.
