Using bold designs and bright colours to create Kinusaiga pictures inspired by nature

Hi, I’m Hilary and I am busy creating Kinusaiga pictures in my studio in West Sussex.

I have always loved fabrics, since studying fashion at university. I love buying fabric, and one of the best parts of the many years I ran after school textiles clubs was the guilt free fabric shopping!

Always creative from a very young age, I have had the good fortune to be able to indulge in my passion throughout my life. Drawing and painting, picture framing, bespoke toy making, lots of crafts and sewing with my children, paper cutting and now my biggest passion yet – Kinusaiga.

Kinusaiga uses a foam board, into which you cut your design. You then tuck pieces of fabric into the board to create the finished picture. This has been a wonderful way to use the enormous stash of fabrics that I’ve been accumulating over the past 30 years. It’s also a good excuse to keep buying new fabrics too!

I have always had a passion for wildlife, so it feels natural to use this as the basis for my picture designs. I love using bold colours and adding a little whimsy here and there.

Through Make it Sew, I have always created textile homewares to sell at craft markets. Some of these may also make it into the store here too.
