Fashion has always lived in my blood. It is not something I simply chose—it chose me, growing alongside me, shaping who I am and who I continue to become. My journey into fashion began far away from a small village in Siem Reap, Cambodia. That village, with its rhythm of daily life, its colours, textures, and traditions, still whispers in every piece I create under the name VAALLAN.
Childhood Beginnings
I was around ten years old when I first held a needle and thread in my hand, not knowing that this humble act would later transform into a lifelong passion. In our household, it was my duty to sew clothes for my younger brothers and sisters when they were still babies. There were no machines, no patterns neatly laid out on glossy paper. Instead, there was me, a young child, sitting with fabric in my lap, carefully stitching garments by hand.
Those moments were more than just chores—they were lessons. Sewing became an expression of care and responsibility, of creativity and problem-solving. With every stitch, I not only clothed my siblings, but also stitched fragments of my own dreams. I would look at them wearing the clothes I had made and feel a quiet pride. That sense of fulfillment, of creating something both beautiful and practical, planted the seed that one day blossomed into VAALLAN.
A Life Between Cultures
My story bridges two worlds. Though I was born in Cambodia, my identity is also deeply tied to Britain as a British. Growing up in Siem Reap grounded me in tradition, while living in the UK gave me the freedom to explore, innovate, and embrace modernity. This balance—between heritage and progress, between Cambodia and Britain—is at the heart of VAALLAN.

The brand’s name itself carries a piece of my soul. VAALLAN was born in Swansea, our home sweet home, inspired by the memories and love I share with my husband, Allan. He is my partner in every sense of the word—my strength, my inspiration, my everything. When I launched VAALLAN, I was running everything alone—designing, stitching, beading, sourcing, sewing, and dreaming. But within that seed lay a powerful vision: to expand beyond Swansea, to share my designs with the world, and to bring people clothing that resonates with both culture and comfort.
