About Unruly Patterns

Unruly Patterns

Wild watercolours. Handbound books. From the first brushstroke to the last stitch.

Hello, I'm the maker behind Unruly Patterns.

I may have a small confession: I'm a bit of a craft hoarder.
I love exploring new techniques, new materials and new ways of making things. If there's a creative rabbit hole to disappear down, I'll probably end up in it.

Unruly Patterns was never part of a grand plan. It happened almost by accident. Through all my experimenting, two things refused to let me go: printing my original watercolours onto fabric and creative bookbinding. Together, they felt like magic. Seeing a painting transformed into a beautiful handbound book still gives me the same satisfaction it did the first time I made one.

My love of creativity started with doodles. Little patterns would quietly appear in the corners of notebooks, across scraps of paper and in the backgrounds of my watercolour paintings. Those unruly patterns eventually became the heart of my work—and even inspired the name of my shop.

Every journal begins with one of my original paintings. I print the artwork onto fabric before carefully handcrafting each hardback from scratch, from the first brushstroke to the last stitch.

What I love most is what happens after a journal leaves my studio. To me, a sketchbook or journal isn't just an object. It's an invitation—to play, to explore, to practise, to reflect, to dream or simply to slow down for a while. Whether it's given as a gift or chosen for yourself, I hope every book becomes part of someone else's creative story.
