About The Winged Donut

The Winged Donut

Wool felt donuts, freshly hand made!

Hi! I'm Ashe, an enthustiastic hand stitcher. My main interest with sewing has always been with felt crafts, and my current obssession is donuts. I just love them; the pleasing shape, the limitless imagination that goes into a fun design, and the fact that they are just a fun food, as well as being super delicious.

Working on making felt food led me down to taking an interest in donuts specifically, and combined with my love of spooky things,
ended up with the winged donut. It almost felt like it was meant to be; wings on a baked good. Combined with fun designs, it was perfect.

I've been working with felt for years now, roughly a decade. I started off making felt necklaces, brooches, anything that could be attached to findings to make wearable art pieces. They were simple, very flawed, but they were very much loved, and much love went into making them. I moved onto making felt food a few years back, making little pieces for my young nephew; these of course went down a treat and thus led me to coming up with designs which then helped me settle on the winged donut. I've made all the basic food types; fruit, veg, bread, even made full meals for my nephew, but the donut was the one I kept coming back to.

I started off using acrylic felt to do my pieces, before I finally decided to try out wool for the first time. I was surprised at how wonderful the quality is, very soft and easy to work with, and the range of colours allowed me to expand my designs further. I'd use the scraps to make smaller pieces that would be used for decoration or jewellery.

My donut designs vary from simple fun designs, to more complex pieces that took several days to complete and have since become personal pieces that I like to show off from time to time, utilising skills I'd learnt from researching felt food making, especially felt cakes; I always loved the work that went into just making small details. Some of my favourite donuts have details that alone took more than a day just to cut out and assemble.

My favourite place to get inspiration is Pinterest. Typing in anything to do with cake decoration or baking, classic desserts or sweets, even pop culture help me to come up with new and interesting designs all the time. I sketch out my designs, select my
colours, decide how much I'm going to need to purchase (so as not to have too much felt lying around) and then spend an afternoon or a weekend working hard to make that vision a reality. I have so many ideas on the backburner that I'd love to bring
forward, and I'm hoping Folksy will help to make that a reality.

Although I had taken something of a break since I wasn't able to really do much with the donuts at the time with not being able to find a place that felt right for selling them, I was determined to bring my interest back again.

I really hope that you enjoy what I have to offer, and that maybe you will consider adopting a winged donut of your own!
