Intricately Detailed Papercuts that Celebrate Personal Stories and the Great Outdoors
Welcome to The Long Room Studio!
Each papercut design is handmade in my cosy garden studio in Rutland, the UK’s smallest county. All of my papercuts begin life as a series of sketchbook drawings and experiments. Once the design is finalised, it is then painstakingly cut out by hand using my trusty scalpel - it is a slow, careful process that results in a finished piece of artwork that is entirely unique. I don’t use a laser cutter in my work as I prefer the meditative crafting process of working by hand, paying attention to tiny details as I draw and cut.
In my personal artwork and sketchbooks, I am inspired by the nature of the British Isles - flora, fauna, British birds and the glorious wide and wild open spaces of Northumberland, Scotland and Far West Cornwall especially. I try to draw daily in my sketchbooks as I think that a papercut can only be as good as the drawing/idea it has evolved from. I’m fascinated by place, narratives, folklore and storytelling - these motifs often emerge when I’m creating.
In my commissioned work, I love to take the personal images and references suggested by a client and weave them together to create an intricate, cohesive, highly personalised design. It is a privilege to be asked to create such special papercuts that will be treasured for years to come - often celebrating momentous occasions such as weddings, births, travel adventures, house moves and family life.
