“Art and craft inspired by and created on a Shetland croft”

Shop Announcement:

Hello and a warm welcome to my reopened shop after a break of a few years - I'm excited about the new direction I'm taking my sheep's fleece. I have been dyeing and spinning for a number of years and began weaving some time ago. I have a rigid heddle loom and love the process of colour combining when I'm making my scarves and cowls.
Having a love of many different crafts I also work with copper and silver and fashion pins and brooches for scarves and shawls - I make resin beads and incorporate them into my designs, as well as using gemstones and lampwork beads.

Please understand there might be delays in the postal service due to the covid19 outbreak.

About the creative croft

the creative croft

Pure Shetland wool, sheared, dyed, spun and woven entirely on our croft from our own flock of Shetland sheep.

I live and work on a croft in a remote part of Shetland and keep a flock of Shetland sheep in a variety of colours - white, fawn, moorit (golden brown), grey and black. The sheep share the croft with our goats, chickens, cats and dogs and we grow vegetables and fruit, much of which has to be grown undercover in our large polytunnel due to the difficult weather conditions.

I've always been a 'maker' and wool, spinning and weaving became a natural progression for me after we began to keep sheep. The ewes all have names and individual personalities and are lovingly cared for. We hand shear all the fleece and I sort and grade each one, labelling with each sheep's name so I know whose fleece I'm working with. I love colour so dyeing the fleece is a joy and gives me the opportunity to use experimental techniques. I have a drum carder and spend a large proportion of my carding time blending the colourways that make my scarves unique. It's a lot of hard work and I find nothing better than to sit down at my trusty spinning wheel and a good film, spinning a rainbow of colour. The final creative step is using my loom to weave the scarves in colourways that nature has inspired me with.

I have a love of many crafts and enjoy designing scarf pins and brooches fashioned out of copper and silver and embellished with my own resin beads as well as gemstones and lampwork beads.
