Handmade Textile Homewares & Collectables with a whimsical twist of childlike charm

Welcome to my folksy shop. I'm Melissa, I'm a Textile Artist and I live in Cheshire, UK. I design and make whimsical homewares and collectables out of fabric, that are both colourful and very retro too!

I have a passion for vintage things; in particular, novelty printed material which I like to upcycle into one of a kind quirky items such as animals, dolls and cushions.
I also love vintage children's toys and whimsical fairy tale books (many of these I still have from my own childhood in the 1980s), and these items, along with my vintage fabric collection, all inspire me with my work, to give my products a whimsical and retro twist of child like charm.

I create artist teddy bears that are inspired by vintage traditional bears and I incorporate my love of colour and vintage fabrics into my designs by using them to sew decorative clothes for the mohair bears.

As well as upcycling fabrics and sewing with mohair & plush bear furs, I also love to design my own printed textiles which I use to create colourful scatter cushions to include personalised family trees and animal shaped pillow toys called 'Cushion Companions' which are cosy, huggable friends for home and travel.

How it all began...
I have always loved art and crafts for as long as I can remember. My love for sewing started when I was about 8 or 9 when I used to buy simple to sew animal sewing kits with my pocket money.
My passion for sewing and design lead to studying Art & Design and Textiles as two of my A levels and I then went on to study printed Textile design at the Manchester Metropolitan University where I gained a BA (Hons) Textiles degree.

I started to design and make collectors mohair teddy bears in 2004 called Melissa Jayne Bears. I sold my bears through my website and I also sold them at collectors fairs up and down the country, Hugglets in London, NEC Birmingham, Brighton & Hove, Pudsey bear fair in Leeds and lots more local ones in the Northwest including at Stockport, Bolton, Buxton and at Arley Hall.
I stopped making bears to sell in 2007 when my first son was a baby because I just didn't have the time I needed to work on them and I was no longer able to attend the bear fairs because I was focused on my little family. I spent the next 5 years sewing and making as a hobby in any spare time that I may have had, including creating a few teddy bears for gifts!
Fast forward to 2012 I wanted to create a unique gift for my parents so I designed them a family tree appliqued cushion consisting of a family of owls in sitting in a tree. This lead me onto the idea of making bespoke cushions for other families so I began sketching out ideas for cushion designs with animals on, namely, owls, cats and bears. It was then in 2013 when I created Melissa Jayne Design, producing vintage inspired, whimsical designs and I started making and selling products again.
