Marlín Birna was born in Reykjavík, Iceland and raised by her devoted grandparents. Both were highly creative, her grandfather a carpenter and her grandmother a seamstress. They recognised and encouraged Marlín’s creativity from an early age.
In 1995, Marlín moved to London to study Fashion Design and Technology at the London College of Fashion. The move opened the door to the design industry and she soon went on to establish her own clothing label.
An introduction to the creative team at Lancôme UK led to Marlín designing uniforms for its department store teams for two consecutive years.
During this period, Marlín also worked with Icelandic artist Björk, becoming one of her preferred bespoke costumiers and creating pieces for award ceremonies, media appearances and music videos in the late 1990s.
Marlín later worked in central London alongside Icelandic footwear designer Marta Jónsson, further developing her experience in fashion.
Today, Marlín creates jewellery in England, featuring Icelandic salmon leather in her contemporary designs.
Rooted in her Icelandic heritage and shaped by years of creative experience, Marlín Birna brings together unusual materials and clean, distinctive styling.
