I trained at Glasgow school of art, my main focus is and always will be painting. In recent years I’ve adapted the way I approach creating and dabbled with new methods. I like to try and sort of merge fine art with craft whenever possible. I find inspiration in simple things, especially in the joy of just making things. For the past few years I’ve made a limited edition batch of around 100 festive themed cards which will be listed in late October. As well as the cards, original small paintings, prints etc I also from time to time make little hand made paper bird decorations, dolls, floral/paper wreathes, hand printed lavender bags and little articulated paper puppets. I much prefer to hand make small batches of work rather than have my images printed on mugs, coaster etc because I think it makes a more genuine piece of work which is 100% handmade.
I also am selling original work with the beautiful Velvet Easel Gallery in Portobello, Edinburgh.
I work from my home in East Ayrshire.
Awards include Big Art Show Paisley Future Paisley award; Society of Scottish Artists Greyfriers award; second prize in the Derwent Art Prize 2020; Millers award, Paisley Art Institute 2019; Derwent award, The Scottish Drawing Competition, Paisley 2017. Recent exhibitions include Sea Monsters, Maritime Museum, Irvine & Dumbarton; Derwent Art Prize, 2018(Mall galleries London) & 2020 (online due to Covid); The Scottish Portrait Awards, 2017.
Maree Hughes received 1st class hons in fine art Glasgow school of art 1988 and Highly Commended Post Graduate Diploma Glasgow school of Art 1989.
