For as long as I can remember - I have enjoyed crafting and sewing.
I went to boarding school and one sewing lesson was to darn a hole in a sock, a hole had been cut out for the purpose by the nun taking the lesson. My darning was excellent and I won the prize for best darning. So I wasn’t put off by that experience. We made scarfs, aprons and petticoats as far as I remember. We also had to sew our name tapes on our clothes and do whatever running repairs were needed, sewing on buttons and rehemming.
In my teenage years I adapted my clothes to make them more fun, jazzy and in keeping with trends and styles. Friends asked me to do similar things for them. I took up lapidary and jewellery making and still have stones ready to work on. While bringing up a family I had little time for my crafts, although I did do some cross-stitch and embroidery.
My sewing room is my sanctuary, I try to keep it tidy and orderly, which it is most of the time. Now I am semi-retired, and between playing with the grandchildren, I have more time to devote to crafts and making, which I find soothing and therapeutic.
