About Lisa Green Textile Artist

Lisa Green Textile Artist

Using wool, needles and thread, I 'sculpt' and 'paint' to create wild creatures, and capture the essence of wild places.

Our natural world amazes me. The connections we can experience with the wild and untamed, feeds my creative work constantly.
I walk with my teenage daughter and our beautiful chocolate Labrador, every day, mostly in an ancient woodland near our home. Whilst Monty dog bounces along the pathways, and finds smelly things to roll in, we are noticing the lichens, budding seedlings, fungi, naming trees, and witnessing the changes in the seasons, the light and weather rolling in.
The Peak District is on our doorstep, and its sheer beauty and variety of places and spaces, cannot fail to inspire. Did you know that it is also home to the Mountain Hare, otherwise known as the Arctic Hare? I am a little obsessed with hares, and have made rather a few!
I work at home, and am dreaming of either converting the attic or building a studio in the garden, because wool needs to breathe and cannot be squeezed tightly into containers, and one day it might 'run' down the street in style of The Magic Porridge Pot!
Speaking of stories, I love storytelling and narrative, so this definitely weaves itself into my work. I have created many textile puppets and props, as well as puppet costumes and set backcloths, in the last 9 years, for Angel Heart Theatre, and Rattlebox Theatre, and have recently created 4 puppets of the characters from Matlock The Hare series, by Jacqui and Phil Lovesey. I love bringing author's characters to life, for promotional purposes and filming. It wonderful to feel their personalities come through as I sculpt.
I have been working as a textile artist for 20 years now, since graduating from my BA Hons Fine Art in Context degree at UWE in Bristol. I have made purses, bags, cushions, book covers, cuffs, amongst other things, using freehand machine embroidery on silk, leather and wool felt.
Wool felt is my favourite material to work with now, because of its versatility. Needle felting is a relatively recent form of craft, and I love using and teaching it, but the technique of wet felting is equally incredible and feels like it connects me to a very ancient art form.
I love teaching and creating commissions, and my connection with my customers, students and collectors is so important and becomes an integral part of my process. So thank you for reading this! I wish you all a beautiful day!
