Landscape Paintings from the North of England

I have been painting all my life - in fact I received my first watercolour set at the age of 7 from my grandmother. Over the years, as my experience and understanding of what makes a great painting has increased, I have slowly gained the confidence to get out there and start selling my work.

All my work is in oil and focusses on the landscape in the north of England, especially the Yorkshire Dales where I live and work. I walk the landscape around me, laden down with sketchbooks and paints until I find a scene of motif that inspires me. Then I make a number of sketches and notes and photographs to take back to the studio where I begin to translate what I have seen into a finished composition. Once the composition is outlined, I largely abandon this material and paint from memory to try and inject my emotional response to the scene, into the painting in the hope that the viewer can experience something of what I felt.

I am also intrigued by the connection of emotion and science. Joh Constable wrote, in 1836, that "painting is a science and should be pursued as an inquiry into the laws of nature. Why then may not a landscape be considered as a branch of natural philosophy?". I have long been fascinated by botany, meteorology, geology and natural history and put all of these interests into my work to create an authentic vision.
