My sewing journey started about 10 years ago when I suddenly got the urge to make a patchwork quilt. So, armed with my mum’s 40 year old Frister Rossman I proceeded to teach myself to sew. I learnt a huge amount in those first few months, not least the importance of good fabric choice, forward planning and accurate cutting.
The first quilt I made was for our middle daughter, we have 3, a double bed quilt in funky browns and oranges.
I think the favourite quilt I have made is a memory quilt, made for the same daughter. It is made from her school, college and early work T shirts and sweatshirts. I gave it a fleece backing and it is the cosiest thing. It was lovely to relive my daughter’s memories with her as we worked together on placement of the pieces.
I made a number of other quilts and bed runners, but being impatient (quilts grow fairly slowly) I turned my hand to cushions and then bags. I love seeing things take shape and take on a life of their own as they morph from a piece of fabric into something 3 dimensional and practical. I still love patchwork quilts and always have at least one on the go.
Fabrics have become my passion and I love nothing better than spending time in my sewing room or, in pre Covid-19 times, at quilt shows scouring the stalls for beautiful fabrics to add to my stash.
