Hello! Welcome to my Folksy Shop.
My name is Hilary, I'm based in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, and work out of a small workshop a short walk for my house. I've been making stained glass on and off for over 15 years... and now full time since 2019.
Keep an eye out on my Instagram page if you like to catch me in person at a local art fair or market.
I'm influenced by the natural environment. Mostly landscapes, floral and fauna, the weather and celestial bodies.
All my pieces are individually designed, painted and constructed by me using the traditional stained glass methods and materials that have not really changed since medieval times.
They are all hand painted with vitreous paint and fired at least twice in a glass kiln, one for the trace line and one for the shading.... and sometimes a 3rd time to incorporate the yellow silver stain.
The firing of the painted layers fuses the medium to the glass and is then permanent and will not fade or erode in the light or the weather. So each piece is essentially a small or sometimes tiny stained glass window that you see in a church.
Once all the pieces are fired, I cut lead came and shape it round the glass, solder all the joints, both sides, and lastly seal the came with a lead putty to weather proof it.
The leaded panels can be hung in a window for best effect, or a bright space with in your home or be hung outside if desired.
I also make copperfoiled "scrap" fish, which have now become one of my staple designs. Each one is totally a one off and designed to fit the left over pieces of cut glass from other bigger projects. Not one is like another. Not recommended for hanging outside.
I hope you enjoy my shop!
